The official photos from this rare occurrence have become the most requested in the history of the National Archives. Elvis wrote the letter on American Airlines stationary mid-flight to the White House, where he planned to hand-deliver the letter to the president.

"His arrival at the White House gates proved effective. A few hours later, he had a meeting with President Nixon, gifted him with a Colt .45 pistol," states Parade writer Vi-An Nguyen. "Nixon obliged, they had their photograph taken, and the next day Elvis returned to Graceland."
