Sweet Inspirations Inducted into R&B Hall of Fame

Last week Elvis' backing vocal group, the Sweet Inspirations, were inducted into the 2014 class of The Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame.

The Sweet Inspirations started their extensive recording career as a backup vocal group founded by Cissy Houston, mother of Whitney Houston.  Their 1967 debut album “Sweet Inspirations” was followed by seven more albums and several notable vocal collaborations with some of the most famous artists, ever. The Sweets were the "go-to" vocal group for artists like Aretha Franklin, Wilson Picket, Jimi Hendrix and many more.

Perhaps the most recognizable among the artists they worked with was Elvis Presley. Elvis always had great admiration for The Sweets and he insisted on working with them. True to his word, he hired them in 1969 with no audition, no questions asked.

Whether harmonizing with Elvis on stage or in the recording studio, it's no secret that Elvis enjoyed working with The Sweets. From joking around to the times they spent together singing gospel songs late into the night - their friendship was one that he really cherished. You can see some of that camaraderie on the recently released concert documentary, Elvis: That's The Way It Is.
