Remembering Ed Hill

Legendary Southern gospel singer Ed Hill, a former member of J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet, passed away last week.

J.D. Sumner of the Stamps Quartet asked Ed to manage his talent agency and music companies, and in 1973 was asked to sing baritone temporarily until a permanent voice could be acquired. His temporary singing engagement turned into five years of fulltime service with the Stamps Quartet – which included singing backup for Elvis Presley.

Ed, along with The Stamps, sang backup with Elvis through 1977 – and he is famously known for being one of the voices who would announce at the close of an Elvis performance … “Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building. Thank you and good night!”

Ed was a guest at many events here at Graceland and was a dear friend to all of us. We will miss his kindness and sweet spirit.
