Memphis Orpheum Welcomes "The Buddy Holly Story" Beginning October 15

Dating back to 1955, Elvis' connection to Buddy Holly began with an opening act in Holly's hometown of Lubbock, Texas. In just three short years, like Elvis, Buddy Holly set the music world on fire, helping mold what would become rock 'n' roll. Elvis fans can now see "The Buddy Holly Story" at the Memphis Orpheum beginning on the 58th anniversary of these performances - Tuesday, October 15 - Sunday, October 20. Director of Graceland's Archives Angie Marchese sat down with the Commercial Appeal to discuss the connection between Elvis and Buddy Holly. According to Marchese, Buddy Holly opened for Elvis three times in Lubbock and Elvis let Holly use his own personal guitar in one of the concerts. Buddy Holly often credits his move from country music to rockabilly to Elvis and seeing him perform live.

“Elvis really was a major influence on several entertainers at the time, including Buddy,” according to Marchese. “Elvis was huge in Texas — after the Memphis market, the next biggest was Louisiana/Texas. He was doing a lot of touring there, including going into Lubbock.”
