In August 2015, David Lee took home the title of Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist of 2015. We recently were able to check-in with David to see how his year has been and get a little more in-sight in our 2015 winner.
What is your favorite Elvis lyric?
“I know not what the future holds, but I know who holds the future.” - "Known Only To Him"
What is your favorite Elvis song and why?
“Promised Land” - It's such a rocker. I always crank up the volume when it comes on. It never fails to put a smile on my face – plus it was always my signature song in competition!
What do you think is Elvis’ biggest accomplishment?
I would say his biggest accomplishment is his longevity. I meet new Elvis fans almost daily - some as young as a year old. Looks like at this point Elvis will outlast us all!
What is one word to describe Elvis?
If you could hang out with Elvis anywhere – when would that be, what would you do, and why?
In the TV room at Graceland at 3 a.m. on any given night listening to vinyl records - because, like me, Elvis was a night owl and music soothes the soul!
If you could give a TCB or TLC to someone, who would you choose and why?
My dad. He died when I was 16 and hasn’t been able to see what my life has become. But I got my love of music from him and I know he has played a part in how things have worked out for me!
When you won the 2015 title, who was the first person you called?
Like any good boy ... I called my Mom! She suffered a stroke in 2011 and is no longer able to travel to shows.
What has this past year been like after winning the Ultimate title?
Quick! It has passed by at light speed and it has been great! I look forward to seeing what the next year brings!
What was the most rewarding part of winning the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist title?
Being able to give God the recognition - HE deserves for allowing me to win it!
If you want people to know one thing about you, what would it be?
That I care ... I appreciate each and every person who supports me as an entertainer and as a friend.
Elvis had many influences. What are some of yours?
Musically - Jim Croce, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Paycheck & Hank Williams are the ones that come to mind instantly. I love music of all genres and age. People would probably be shocked at what all is on my iPod!
Personally - three people jump to the front of the list: my dad, David, who gave me my love of music; my stepdad B.C. Folds who helped me become a man and encouraged me; and my wife's grandfather Leon Ward, who was always a pillar of what was right and was the most giving man I ever knew. All three of these men have passed on but a little bit of them live on in me and in the decisions I make on a daily basis.
If you could give advice to up and coming tribute artists, what would that be?
Always strive to be better than you are, no matter where you are in your career. Some might say I have reached the top and no longer need to worry but I still look for ways make my performances better for the fans.
What was the hardest Elvis song to learn/perfect?
It changes over the years as my voice changes – but a few that come to mind are “Just Pretend,” “How Great Thou Art,” “He Touched Me” and “Reach Out To Jesus.”
