50 Years Ago: Elvis and Priscilla Say ‘I Do’

The king married his queen 50 years ago this year.

Elvis Presley and Priscilla Beaulieu married on May 1, 1967, in Las Vegas, with a few friends and family in attendance.

Of course, that’s not the beginning of the story – let’s go back to 1959, when the couple met.

Elvis met Priscilla on September 13, 1959, while Elvis was stationed in Germany serving in the U.S. Army. The pair become fast friends. At Christmas that year, Priscilla gives him a set of bongo drums.

Elvis left Germany in 1960 and returned to America. The couple kept up with each other throughout the years – Elvis often called Priscilla in Germany, and she visited Elvis in the states. She moved to Memphis in the spring of 1963 to complete her high school education.

Elvis proposed to Priscilla on Christmas Eve 1966, presenting her with a ring he purchased from jeweler Harry Levitch.

Elvis and Priscilla’s wedding took place at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas at about 11:45 a.m. on May 1, 1967.

Immediately following the wedding, the couple and their families attended a press conference, followed by the reception. The newlyweds honeymooned in Palm Springs, California, for a few days, before returning to Memphis on May 5.

On Monday, May 29, the couple hosted a reception at Graceland for friends, family and employees. They wore their wedding attire, and the building located near the pool (now the Trophy Building, but it had once housed Elvis’ slot-car track) was decorated in green and white. Tony Barrasso provided the music, and the food included a buffet and wedding cake, catered by Monte’s Catering Service.

First comes love, second comes marriage… and nine months to the day, Lisa Marie Presley was born on February 1, 1968.

    Hi!

Enjoyed the wedding pictures and reading about the event.
I grew up in the 50s/60s so I was lucky to see the beginning of Elvis’s career and rise to fame. My older brother and I used to do the “Bop” to Blue Suede Shoes and Hound Dog on the sidewalk at Newport Beach, CA….at a hamburger place where there was a Jukebox–(I was 6 and my brother was 12). We put a lot of nickels in that machine and had a blast! Our dad thought we were throwing our money away!
My daughter and I will visit Graceland 5/25 & 26, 2017–out second visit!
Elvis embodies everything that is good and enduring in music! He had it all!

It’s a shame it didn’t last, they were very happy, but being away from home like Elvis was, is very hard to have a successful marriage, especially when you are Elvis Presley, and women are throwing themselves at you

SO MUCH IT SHOWS BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE THAT WERE DESTINTED TO BE TOGETHER, I JUST WISH IT WOULD OF LASTED, AND IT COULD OF IF ELVIS HAD ONLY REALIZED THAT PRISCILLA MARRIED HIM FOR HIM ELVIS, NOT THE PERFORMER BUTTHE MAN HIMSELF, AND SHE WANTED MORE CHILDREN WITH HIM. BUT THE LOVE THEY HAD LASTED AFTER THE DIVORCE, HE NEVER LOVED ANY OTHER NOR DID SHE. THEY HAD AN AWESOME DAUGHTER LISA MARIE. LOVE TO YOU ALL AND ELVIS RIP AND LET LISA KNOW SOMEHOW FROM HEAVEN YOU ARE STILL THERE FOR YOU. LINDA

That was just beautiful to see the pictures. You can tell how much they loved each other. They made a beautiful couple and a beautiful daughter. Cilla and Elvis loved each other to the end of his life. I am sure Cilla still loves him and he is looking down at her because he loved her. Too bad they couldn’t stay together but that Tom Parker did not give Elvis a chance to rest or take a break. Elvis and Cilla saw each other until the end. He would visit at all hours of the day and night and just sit and talk for hours. They made such a beautiful couple. Love them both and miss them both

I was in college when they got married and was thinking how maybe EP had turned a corner and was ready to stay focused and move away from the image. Never happened sadly. Has anyone given any thought to publishing a book of the letters sent to Graceland after Elvis died? Might make for a powerful statement of how loved he was with these condolences sent to Vernon and the family.

I took my grandson Colin to Memphis for his 21st Birthday June 8,2017. We went to Graceland on the 10th. I hadn’t been there since 1983 and was so happy that the Mansion was the same as when Elvis and Priscilla lived there. We spent several hours there and Colin said to me that he always felt that Elvis was like a myth but after going to his home he felt like he was so real. That made my day. I love Elvis and Priscilla and pray that they will be together again in heaven. We had a great time and listen to Elvis radio all the time
